Looking To Start Small Local Business–Ideas Please?

I want to start a dating service that combines online and events that are local (to create a niche) I have a few good ideas on what exactly I want, but I am kind of lost on how to get started. I would like to launch everything by the summer time, but trying to work out things like pricing and whether or not I should have a physical location are beyond me. Please help if you have any good advice, thank you.
I also want to lean toward branding it more of a “dating club” than the traditional dating service.I don’t want people to feel like they are doing the same things over and over again. Also, I have been thinking of making contracts with local resturants and things to host these social activities but I suppose I am a little bit lost on how to start branding and marketing my business.

First, you need to write up a business plan and submit it to your local chamber of commerce (if you have one) and also make sure it is legal in your area to run such a business. It is not legal where I live. It can be dangerous to have a physical location because, for one, if someone is angry about the way a date went, they could retaliate upon you personally, and, secondly, many local people may not want a “dating service” to be a part of their community next to their cake shop and thrift store (for example). If there is someone crazy contacting a client online and they meet up in a local place, a bad scene could happen, and may cause that local event to lose credibility or business. For instance, if the County Fair and Rodeo (I am from Wyoming) is a featured event in which clients can meet and go for a date, other people may find it offensive to have that be a meeting ground for lovers that have just met online. Now, if it is the other way around, where you host a mingle or meet and greet at a local place and advertise it as a singles event, then the people who have met up can go online and chat and view profiles, then that could work. Dating services are always dangerous. You have to be careful of whom you pair with whom and make sure the clients are compatible, as well as make sure they sign a voucher that after you allow the couple to meet that your role is complete and that you are not responsible for any mishaps… basically have them sign a paper stating that your company is waived from all negative involvement. It would save your butt if someone were harmed or emotionally crushed.

Something else you can do to see if this is the right thing for you to do is to take a poll of single people in the community and see if it is something that they would be interested in. As for charging, ask the same poll people how much they would be willing to pay a dating service to help them find a match. Usually around $40 or $50 per month of membership is standard. If you charge too much, people will think you are scamming them. If you charge too little, they will think that you are not capable of doing a good job. Keep it at a median and don’t get greedy. Best of luck to you… Oh, and January is a HORRIBLE time to start a business, as is August (because no one wants to spend money right after Christmas, though in you industry a February special would be IDEAL, and August because everyone has vacationed in the summer and has spent money and wouldn’t want to spend more when it’s time to buckle down and head back to college classes, nor will they need a date when its time to study haha). March to April are good times to start businesses, as well as November (so Christmas gift subscriptions for a lonely friend can be a great sale pitch, as well as needing a cuddle bunny as the weather geets cooler).

This is the best I can do for ya, sweetie, and I wish you the best of luck!
